Sewing tutorial: how to cover buttons with fabric?
A few days ago, I showed youphotosof my latest creation onInstagram: pajamas. For this garment, I decided that I would cover the buttons with the same fabric.
I used 11 mm diametermetal cover buttonsfromCouture Loisirs. The instructions are on the back of the package, but I didn't find it easy to assemble them following the manufacturer's instructions. Perhaps this is due to the small diameter of the buttons... Anyway, in this article, I'll explain how I did it.
Step 1 for covering buttons: cutting the fabric
First, prepare the fabric:
- fine fabricsmustbe interfaced,
- Thick fabricsshouldbe slightly dampened (I recommend dampening the fabric once it has been cut to the correct size; otherwise, you will find it difficult to trace circles on damp fabric_ see next paragraph).
Next, cut out the template ( pattern) on the back of the packaging and trace circles onto the fabric (don't do what I did: use chalk or a washable pen):
Step 2: Build the fabric
Using a needle and thread, baste the fabric around its circumference:
Step 3: Tighten the fabric
First and foremost, note that each button consists of two parts:
- anupper part: the part that is covered with fabric,
- alower part: the part that allows you to close the button at the back.
Place the metal button (upper part) upside down on the reverse side of the fabric and pull the two threads so that the fabric closes over the button:
Step 4: Attach the fabric to the button hooks.
Pull both threads tight and push the fabric into the button (using your finger) to make it stick to the claws. Then cut the threads and push them back into the button:
Step 5 for covering buttons: the finishing touches
Finally, manually insert the back part of the button (protruding inward) and click it into place. Don't hesitate to press down hard to make sure the button is secure. Personally (being the perfectionist that I am 😅), I used flat pliers to press everything down firmly (be careful if you do this, don't forget to put a piece of cotton on the fabric side, otherwise the metal of the flat pliers may tear the fabric or deform the button).

There you go! I hope that covering up pimples is no longer a mystery to you 😀
